SQL Server Database Administrator

Hybrid Model: 3 days per week in Central London, 3 days remote

Working Hours: On call aspect to the role, standard office hours other than when on-call.

About the Client and the Role:

My client, a globally renowned financial organisation, is seeking an experienced and well rounded SQL DBAto join their team on a permanent basis and provide support for their large on-premises database infrastructure.

The candidate must have an enthusiastic attitude and motivated approach to work, as well as a desire to continually learn about new technologies. The workload is expected to be heavily BAU focussed.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all database servers are backed up maintaining data integrity and minimising potential loss.
  • Conduct regular testing of backups to verify our ability to meet the business's recovery plan and ensure timely data restoration in case of a disaster.
  • Configure SQL Server monitoring utilities, to optimise alert settings and minimise false alarms, ensuring efficient and accurate monitoring of server performance.
  • Perform routine patching of SQL Servers in compliance with the clients' patching policy, including both scheduled updates and emergency patches as needed.
  • Raise and manage change requests for implementing necessary changes to both production and non-production SQL Server environments.
  • Implement database change scripts provided by third-party vendors to ensure smooth integration and functionality.
  • Address audit and risk findings promptly to enhance security and safeguard the integrity of the firms MS SQL estate.
  • When faced with performance issues, analyse and identify the most effective solutions, whether through hardware upgrades, server configuration adjustments, or optimising index and query performance.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of the company's database environment to ensure transparency and facilitate efficient management.
  • Fine-tune T-SQL queries to enhance performance and optimise database operations, promoting overall system efficiency.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Strong track record of successfully designing, implementing, and managing highly available, large-scale customer-facing systems in a 24x7 operational environment.
  • Extensive expertise in configuring and maintaining clustering, DR, and high availability solutions to ensure system resilience and uptime.
  • Proven commitment to automation, utilising tools such as Ansible or similar automation frameworks to streamline and optimise operational tasks.
  • Proficiency in version control systems, including Git and GitHub, for efficient code management and collaboration.
  • In-depth understanding of database security principles and best practices, ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive data.
  • Strong familiarity with enterprise monitoring solutions and associated operational support processes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Windows clustering technologies, Always-On configurations, and high availability architectures to support robust system resilience.
