The traditional mainframe, a large computer system usually permanently fixed into a dedicated server room, was the mainstay of corporate computing environments until the 1990s when cheap powerful PC servers started to replace them. However, the mainframe has had somewhat of a resurgence with companies requiring a large amount of processing and/or high transaction volumes.
