Do you have experience bringing together signalling, traffic management, operational planning and wider railway systems within a complex environment? An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a Lead Traffic Management System Engineer to help define how one of the world's most advanced high speed railways will be controlled and operated. HS2 is developing a highly automated and integrated Traffic Management System which will bring together the control and real time planning of the railway. With the programme currently in the concept phase, this position offers the opportunity to influence the fundamental operating principles, requirements and functionality of the future railway. The team needs a TMS subject matter expert and conceptual thinker who understands railway operations and can consider how individual systems, functions and standards fit together within the wider operational picture. This is a client side role within the Chief Engineer's Group, working within the Command, Control & Signalling Engineering Team and reporting directly to the Head of CCS. The Challenge The Traffic Management System will sit at the centre of how HS2 plans, regulates and controls railway operations. The successful candidate will need to understand both the control and planning layers of TMS and, critically, how an operational railway actually works. This means looking beyond individual products or technical functions and understanding how traffic management, signalling, railway operations, rolling stock, stations and infrastructure combine to deliver a safe, reliable and high capacity railway. You will help define what the TMS needs to do, develop the requirements and technical approach, and work with suppliers and the wider engineering organisation to turn the operational concept into a deliverable system. The system is currently at concept stage and will need to progress through scheme design, detailed design and ultimately installation and implementation. This provides an unusual opportunity for a TMS specialist to influence the system before the technical solution becomes fixed. The Role As Lead Traffic Management System Engineer, you will provide technical leadership and overall technical assurance for the TMS engineering discipline. You will work closely with the wider engineering disciplines to develop solutions which consider all relevant systems and subsystems, while ensuring that the operational needs of the railway remain at the centre of the design. A major part of the role will be understanding and managing the interfaces between TMS and the wider railway. This includes other CCS subsystems, rail systems, Network Rail and third party systems, as well as stations, infrastructure and other operational interfaces. You will engage with technical, operational, supplier and delivery stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach is taken to the development of the system. You will also work with the TMS supplier to challenge and develop proposed solutions, ensuring that the technology being developed delivers the railway capability HS2 requires. Key Responsibilities
We are looking for an experienced Traffic Management Systems professional who combines specialist technical knowledge with a strong understanding of railway operations. You will ideally have significant experience working with TMS, integrated railway control systems or closely related railway control and planning systems. Importantly, you need to understand more than how a TMS product works. You must understand how an operational railway works and how traffic is planned, regulated and controlled in real time. You will be comfortable operating at a conceptual level, mapping out how a complex system needs to work and translating operational requirements into system functionality. You should be someone who naturally thinks about the whole railway rather than a single system boundary and can identify how changes or decisions within one system may affect other parts of the railway. You will also need the confidence and credibility to challenge established requirements, standards and proposed technical solutions where they do not provide the right outcome for the railway. Essential Requirements
This is a particularly rare opportunity for a TMS specialist to influence the operating concept of HS2 while the system is still being defined. Rather than joining once the technology and functionality have already been established, you will have the opportunity to help shape the requirements, operating principles and technical solution from the concept stage. You will work at the intersection of railway operations, signalling, traffic management, systems integration and engineering delivery, with responsibility for ensuring that the developing TMS works as part of the railway as a whole.
