IBM's System i was previously known as the eServer i Series, and prior to that as AS/400 - the name which it is still referred to by most people in the industry. Designed as a minicomputer for general business departmental use, it gained popularity for larger applications in no small part due to it's tightly integrated DBMS (DB/2).
